How long insulated bags keep food cold comes down to three things: foam thickness, how tight your seams are, and how much you actually pack inside.

We ran a test on this. Grabbed one of our 8mm EPE reusable insulated cooler bags, tossed in two ice packs, filled it about 80% with canned drinks, and left it sitting in our warehouse. No AC, roughly 88°F that day. Checked back six hours later, drinks were still cold. Not ice-cold, but solid fridge temperature.

A: An insulated bag is a thermally lined bag designed to maintain the internal temperature of its contents, whether hot or cold. The insulation layer traps air and reflects heat to slow temperature transfer. If we're talking pure thermal resistance, here's roughly how things stack up:

PU foam is at the top, around R-3.5 per inch. That's what the premium brands use. Below that, you've got XPE and EVA foam sitting around R-2, then EPE foam at maybe R-1.5. Vacuum panels blow everything away at R-5 to R-7, but they're fragile and expensive. We've only used those for pharmaceutical cold chain stuff.

Most of our orders land somewhere in the EPE to XPE range. It's the sweet spot between cost and performance for eco friendly reusable insulated cooler bags. We'll layer aluminum foil behind the foam to bounce radiant heat, that combo handles 90% of use cases.

A: In practice? Not much. People use these terms interchangeably and nobody's going to correct you.

If you want to split hairs, "insulated" usually implies keeping things cold, while "thermal" covers both hot and cold. A reusable pizza delivery bag is thermal. A reusable beach cooler bag is insulated. But walk into any trade show and you'll hear both terms used for the same product.

A: BPA free PEVA lining is your friend. It's free of BPA, PVC, lead, phthalates, all the stuff people worry about. We get ours third-party tested and keep the certificates on file.

For the outer material, recyclable polyester or sustainable cotton canvas are both safe and eco friendly. The lining is what matters most since that's what touches the food containers.

What to avoid? PVC is the big one. Cheap insulation bags sometimes use it because it's dirt cheap, but it can contain phthalates that leach out over time. If a bag smells strongly of plastic when you open the box, that's usually a red flag.
